Tree removal and lopping on the Gold Coast. Coastal strip, hinterland, palm specialists.

Cluster of mature Norfolk pines along a Gold Coast canal frontage

The Gold Coast is two cities for tree work. The coastal strip from Coolangatta to Coomera is palms, Norfolk pines, salt-pruned hibiscus, and the occasional aging fig. The hinterland is wet-sclerophyll forest, blackbutt, flooded gum, and bushland-buffer protection. We do both — different crews, different gear.

City of Gold Coast — Significant Tree Register + VMAs

City of Gold Coast uses two main protection mechanisms:

  • Significant Tree Register — heritage and landmark trees, individually listed.
  • Vegetation Management Areas (VMAs) — bushland zones in the hinterland and along Currumbin/Tallebudgera valleys. Most native vegetation requires permits.

Most coastal-strip residential blocks aren't in a VMA. Most hinterland blocks are. The check is on the Gold Coast Council planning portal — five minutes, no charge. QLD-wide directory has direct links.

Surrounding LGAs we cover: Tweed Shire (NSW side, separate rules), Logan (south Logan suburbs that border the coast), Scenic Rim (rural acreage west).

What it costs on the Gold Coast

Coastal-strip premium reflects canal frontage (limited truck access), high-rise areas (parking permits + traffic control), and salt-air corrosion adding to equipment costs. Hinterland sits at the national average.

The palm "removal" that's actually a frond clean

Half the palm-removal calls we get could be a $200 frond clean. Bangalows in particular look "dead" when the lower fronds turn brown — but the green crown above is healthy and the tree's not going anywhere. We did a job on three Bangalows along the side of a Burleigh house last year. Customer wanted them all out — quoted $1,800. On site we recommended a frond clean instead — $200 for all three. They're still there, healthier than ever.

Always ask for an honest assessment before booking palm removal. The most over-removed tree in Australia is a healthy palm.

Cyclone and storm prep

The Gold Coast doesn't get full cyclones often, but ex-tropical lows and east-coast lows produce 110+ km/h winds most summers. Coastal-strip Norfolk pines and high jacarandas overhanging the canals are the usual storm casualties.

Pre-storm crown reductions Sept–Nov: $400–$1,200. Saves $5,000–$15,000 of roof or boat damage on average. Book early — we get queued out by November.

Frequently asked — Gold Coast

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on the Gold Coast?

City of Gold Coast uses a Significant Tree Register + Vegetation Management Areas. Most coastal-strip blocks under 6m don't need permits; mature gums, figs, Norfolk pines, and anything in the hinterland VMA do.

How much does tree removal cost on the Gold Coast?

Coastal strip 5–10% above national average. Hinterland at standard rates. Small: $400–$900. Medium: $1,000–$2,000. Large: $1,800–$3,500. Mature Norfolk pine: $3,500–$7,000+.

What about Norfolk pines and palms?

Norfolk pines often heritage-protected. Palms (Cocos, Bangalow, Kentia) usually unrestricted. Many palm 'removals' could be a $200 frond clean — ask first.

Do you cover the hinterland?

Yes — Tamborine, Springbrook, Beechmont, Canungra. Different gear (forestry-grade for the big eucalypts), different access. VMA permits typically required.

What about Cocos palms — they're a weed, can I remove for free?

Cocos palms are declared environmental weeds in QLD — usually exempt from any permit and actively encouraged for removal. We've never seen a council refuse a Cocos removal application. Cost: $300–$800 each.
